Research Critique: The Freshman Seminar and Academic Success of At-Risk Students Authors Potts, Glenn; Schultz, Brian Importance of the Problem Attention to student retention and success remains a significant priority among universities across the globe. Trends to support academic success programs among freshman that increase second year persistence and timely graduation at postsecondary institutions continue to be adopted. As more states implement funding based funding, campuses have a more targeted focus and have increased attention on student retention and completion rates. The increase in accountability has been enforced in many states, at the same time campuses are adjusting to significant decreases in state funding. First, the academic cohorts and freshman seminar may make the learning experience more effective as suggested by Baker amp; Pomerantz (2000). Second , the academic cohort and the freshman seminar are intended to help create a â€Å"sense of belonging to a group† that can provide support. This is expected to increase retention (Elkins et al, 2000; Hoffman et al, 2002-2003). Each of the three groups in the sample looked and compared: the mean GPA, retention rates, total credits earned. It further measured the students ACT, High School Rank , Residence Hall and Living Off Campus for first semester. The researchers found that the data did not reveal significant patterns and or relationships among the categories used. The numerical differences in mean GPA, credits earned and retention rates were relatively small. T-tests of retention rate differences for the Freshman Seminar treatment and the no treatment control group also showed no statistically significant differences. Conclusions and implications drawn from the study In an effort to improve retention and student success the business college used a blended approach to increase the success rates specifically among students in the college of business. Visual Cues, Harassed Symbolism and the Grim Fantasy Unlike other blissfully enchanted film genres, this evocative fairytale becomes a surreal escape into the work of Guillermo Del Toro. This chilling story confines make believe verses reality through the eyes of a young girl. Two worlds are represented within Pan’s Labyrinth, a cold hard fascist regime in Spain, and a captivating fantasyland both conveyed through visual story telling. The striking surrealism of the fantasy world becomes reflections in reality, providing small visual cues that increase as the story unfolds, unveiling a grim interaction between Ophelia and the new world she has encountered. This feeling never goes away for Ofelia, she engages in different levels to get a chance at her new life in the fantasy world. Becoming homesick for a place she has never been or remembers. The clothing plays a role in sustaining the mise-en-scene in this film. Ofelia is dressed in drab clothing along with her mother. Fabricating the lifestyle from which they came from, and a disparity that is latched onto them when being brought to this new home. They instantly become the outsiders from the beginning, largely recognized during the panning shot of the camp while Ofelia becomes more intrigued by the fairies return. Tight, uniformed men lined up in a row contrasted against a young curious, dowdy girl. The style of clothing not only distinguishes the relationship between the newcomers, Ofelia and her Mother, to the military camp, but also positions an extra connection between Ofelia and Mercedes. As Mercedes arrives to explain the Labyrinth to Ofelia, her clothes are ordinary and dull much like that of Ofelia. The dissimilar impression that Mercedes has from the camp appeals to Ofelia, and a relationship is bonded. The organization received a lot of resistance from the staffs who were comfortable working with the previous software (Investments, Retail Company, 2017). They are also planning to bring certain changes regarding the promotion and appraisal of the employees. Some of the employees have even left the company because they think that the new promotion method and the changes brought in the organization are not in their favor. Though the management is yet to disclose the changes it is about to bring but the information has been communicated to the employees (Cawsey et al., 2016). In order to manage the situation the company can take a number of steps that will help its employees to accept the change and the employee turnover is reduced. Firstly, it is very important for the management to plan the entire change process, they need to make a blueprint so that it can be easily explained to the employees. Planning is the most important thing that the management of the Retail. For efficiency for their planning they should consult and take advice of some experts (Xu et al., 2016). It is very important that the employees are made a part of the planning process so that there is very less resistance from the employees. Their suggestions are to be taken and given importance. What are the benefits of the change- They should communicate the benefits of change to their employees, how would it be beneficial for them. If the employees are not communicated about the benefits they will always be reluctant about the entire process and will not participate or show interest. What can be the demerits of the change- It is equally important that the demerits of the change to be brought be communicated to the employees so that they do not have any confusion, and transparency is maintained. Communicating only the positives of the change might not always be helpful because in later stages of execution problems might arise (Burnes, 2015). Motivating the employees should be done so that they are mentally ready for accepting the changes. They should be told about the benefits of the change and why it is necessary for any organization to bring changes within its operations and policies. The Panda Retail should not implement any changes that are against the interest of the employees because those changes are bound to be resisted by the employees (Dawson Andriopoulos, 2014). After the communication of the change process, it is very important to provide training to the employees to prepare them for the change that is going to take place.
